Bring: Energy and enthusiasm and a bottle of water, if you like. Please do not bring purses, backpacks, ipods, cameras, etc.
Parking: Temple Campus police will be around and directing folks so if you have questions, you may ask them. Remember, we are starting at the Liacouras Center and ending at Mitten Hall (just 2 blocks away).
* Temple is waiving the parking restrictions on Broad street between Cecil
B Moore and Berks which means you can park on both sides of the street.
* There is no charge at the metered parking since it is a holiday.
* The Liacouras Center and all Temple parking lots are reducing the price
from $12 to $8.
* There are many side streets with parking - watch for one way streets as
you look for them!
Registration: First step is to find Pat Geraghty in the Liacouras Center atrium. (Leaders should have her cell phone number handy to make contact.) Be ready to provide the name of your group's leader and a count of youth and leaders. Groups should be approx. 25 each. She will check you in and provide yellow "Mormon Helping Hands" hats. She will direct you to the "LDS Church" registration table where you can pick up your shirt (must be worn) and green wristband (which means you are a registered volunteer). Then we will gather in the seats in the arena.
Service project: We'll be assembling 1,000 arts and crafts kits for Cradles to Crayons, and 2,000 kits for shelters throughout our four-stake area. Your stake director of public affairs is handling the distribution of kits in your area. Instructions and supplies for the kits will be on tables at Mitten Hall. If you have questions, look for folks wearing red bandanas.
We are looking forward to an enjoyable day - with new friends, historical
moments and service to the Lord. Thank you for your support and participation. See you there!
If you have questions or need additional information, please contact your stake's Director of Public Affairs or Young Men/Young Women leaders.

"The Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ has no doubt had a powerful impact on your life. It has, in part, shaped who you are and what your future will be. Do not be afraid to share with others your experiences as a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. We all have interesting stories that have influenced our identity. Sharing those stories is a nonthreatening way to talk to others. Telling those stories can help demystify the Church. You could help overcome misperceptions through your own sphere of influence, which ought to include the Internet." ~ Elder M. Russell Ballard, “Sharing the Gospel Using the Internet,” Ensign, Jul 2008
Our Speaker: Ahmad S. Corbitt
Following our January 19th service project, we’ll enjoy box lunches and an inspirational message from Ahmad S. Corbitt, President of the Cherry Hill New Jersey Stake and Director of the New York Office of Public and International Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
President Corbitt regularly represents the Church at the United Nations and other international activities and events. He interacts with the media on behalf of the Church.
Previously, he was with Delaware-based Corporation Service Company and Coltrin & Asociates, Inc. , a public relations firm. During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, he acted as a spokesperson for the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. He was a successful trial and appellate lawyer.
President Corbitt is married to the former Jayne L. Joslin. They are the parents of six children and have four grandchildren.
Earlier this year, President Corbitt was one of the featured speakers at the Church Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Priesthood Revelation. The fireside took place on Sunday June 8, 2008 in the Tabernacle on Temple Square and celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 1978 revelation that extended the Priesthood to all worthy male members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He said, “We see the future of the Church in our youth. I am inspired as I have the privilege of serving, teaching and counseling them. They are a choice generation. So many are totally committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and have an understanding of the importance the Atonement plays in their individual lives…Let us teach them of the strength that comes from unity and the kingdom of God on the earth that recognizes the rich heritage of ethnicity yet rejoices in our oneness through our Father’s plan.”
A complete transcript of President Corbitt’s remarks is available here:
In 2006, Meridian Magazine profiled President Corbitt; here's link to article:http://www.meridianmagazine.com/people/060210pioneers.html
We look forward to hearing from President Corbitt!
"As we seek Christ, as we find Him, as we follow Him, we shall have the Christmas spirit, not for one fleeting day each year, but as a companion always. We shall learn to forget ourselves. We shall turn our thoughts to the greater benefit of others." ~ President Thomas S. Monson, First Presidency Message, Ensign, December 1987

The Details: King Day of Service, January 19, 2009
What? We'll be participating in the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, joining thousands of volunteers for the largest Day of Service in the nation!
When? Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 19, 2009 from 8 am to 1 pm (not including travel time).
Where? Temple University's Liacouras Center (sports and entertainment arena) in downtown Philadelphia, 1771 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19121. This is the signature event location for the Day of Service. (Directions to Liacouras Center, parking information, and exact meeting location at the Center will be forthcoming. Please leave bags, purses and valuables at home, or locked in your vehicle.) The Liacouras Center is just minutes from the Philadelphia Temple site!
How? Youth and leaders from each ward/branch will carpool to the Liacouras Center. Bring enthusiasm and a bottle of water, with your name on it. Plan on arriving between 8 and 9 am. You'll register (as part of the group from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), pick up and put on your Day of Service t-shirt, and join our group. We'll be one of many organizations participating in multiple service projects at the arena. The morning will begin with a kick-off celebration, followed by the service projects. At approx. 12 noon, as the service projects are completed, our group will gather to enjoy box lunches (provided) and a speaker, Ahmed Corbitt, President of the Cherry Hill New Jersey Stake and Director of the New York Office of Public Affairs and International Affairs for the Church (additional biographical information about President Corbitt will be posted on the blog). Each ward/group will then return home. You might want to stop at the Philadelphia Temple site on your way home. (Important: Leaders of each ward/branch are responsible for the safety and behavior of their youth. Please use the buddy system for restroom breaks, etc, and please be aware of the safety and whereabouts of your youth throughout the day.)
What? We'll be assembling hygiene kits and arts and crafts kits for children. Many of the arts and crafts kits will be given to Cradles to Crayons, a Philadelphia-based organization that provides basic essentials, free of charge, to low-income and homeless children from birth to pre-teens. And, each stake will take kits back to their area for distribution to local shelters. A grant from LDS Humanitarian Services is providing funding for the project.
Why? "Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conservation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12, the 2009 Mutual Theme.

They could watch the three videos at the blog or learn more about our speaker. Plans for carpooling and visiting the Philadelphia Temple site following the service project could be discussed. Let's get our youth excited about this wonderful opportunity!
Another flier and poster (with the additional details above) for youth, leaders and parents will be distributed through each stake's Director of Public Affairs in the next few weeks.

"When we catch the vision regarding the worth of human souls, when we realize the truth of the adage, 'God’s sweetest blessings always flow through hands that serve Him here below,' then we have quickened within our souls the desire to do good, the willingness to serve, and the yearning to lift to a higher plane the children of God."
